Giddy Up

One of our fun spots in LA is Griffith Park. There's the zoo, carousel, Gene Autry Museum, hiking, train rides, and pony rides.

We had a family day with Papa and Mimi, and we sure had fun!

Savannah LOVED riding the horses! She had a huge smile the whole time.

Maddie also was excited to ride, even though she looks pretty serious.

She rode the horses that trot- super fun!

After the horses, we rode the train, and then went to lunch. It was a special day!

Tomorrow we hop on a plane and fly to NOVA. Please pray for our girls to do well on the flight, for us to honor the Lord in this transition, and that we will have fun doing it!

Open House

My parents hosted an open house to celebrate our move to NOVA. We had a wonderful time with friends, and are so thankful for their influence on our lives!

We are thankful beyond words for these relationships. Some I've known since I was a little girl, others have only been in our lives the last few months. What they have in common...a sincere love for the Lord. We are so blessed to have been touched by these people!

In the Last Week...

In the last week the four of us moved from our house in Chatsworth to my parents house in North Hills. All of our belongings are in a truck headed to Virginia!

Here we are having a little PJ dance party at Mimi and Papa's. We've had fun dancing, playing, reading, going to the zoo, and even sharing the stomach flu this past week!

Brooke Moore threw a little Valentine's party for the ballet girls. The time with friends was even sweeter than the food!

My dad and I went deep sea fishing! You might ask, "What made them do that??" Well, let me tell you...since I was about 7 years old, my dad and I have enjoyed going fishing together. It's "our thing". I've always had a close relationship with my dad. He's a humble godly man. I've always been able to talk with him about anything and am thankful for his wisdom and leadership in my life.

We hit some swells, so a few of us got sea sick.

As we were fishing, pelicans and sunfish followed the boat.

Between the two of us, we caught 11 fish! My dad definitely caught more than me!

He even brought in a crab!!

Here's the guys cleaning the fish. It was a gorgeous day...complete with a rainbow as we pulled into port. We plan on frying them up this week :)

This morning Pastor MacArthur brought up the elders to lay hands on Jesse and I. We are officially sent out by Grace Community Church to Immanuel Bible Church. It was a surreal experience. I've been at this church for 30 years, Jesse's been here 11 years. We have been the ones sending others off, and now we're up! We love this family of believers, and will miss them. Here is an article Jesse wrote in the Grace today that sums up our thoughts. Yet, the Lord has so evidently directed us to go to Immanuel Bible Church. We are excited and look into the future confident in God's plan! Already we have been blessed by this new body of believers. They have flooded us with kind emails, messages, and are even working on our new home! We are anxious to get to know them and make IBC our home. God is so faithful!

I love my dear friend Rachel. This morning she built a tent fort in our living room with the girls. We had a Chick Fil A picnic in there and the girls haven't stopped playing inside of the fort all day. Madison and Savannah just love Rachel.

So Many Thoughts...

I haven't had the time to sit down and blog lately...just too much going on in preparing to move across the country! These days are filled with getting together with dear friends and family, making decisions for our new home, and organizing to move. We are enjoying each moment, as they are directly ordained by God.

The other day a group of my mom's dear friends got together with me for a time of prayer. It was a sweet time. Each of these ladies have played an important role in my life- models of what a young woman should strive to be. They each wrote out their prayers for our family, and put them in a notebook for me to take. Just so precious.

These photos were taken last night by my dear friend Rachel. We met her and Mike at the beach, took some pictures, ate a picnic dinner, and then went to Dee Dee Reese for ice cream. I'm so thankful for my friendship with Rachel and the fun we all had last night.

We are thankful for these full days with friends and family. We are soaking up all our CA time, and looking with smiles on our faces towards the future. We know that God is faithful, and we are excited to see Him lead us.

Ladies Day

While Jesse was in Virginia, the girls and I did some special activities. One day Savannah stayed home with Rachel White (fun time for her), while the bigger girls went to the American Girl Place.

Of course dog joined us for tea. Maddie said dog did not want to dress up for the special time out, but she did!

It's Official...We're Moving to Virginia!

We were thrilled to find out tonight that Immanuel Bible Church has called Jesse to be their teaching pastor! God is so good to direct us to this church family. Thank you for your prayers and all the kind notes we've received regarding this. We look forward to what God will do to grow both us and this loving church closer to Him.

Our plan is to move in a month. It is hard to think about leaving our family and church here in California, but we trust God's guidance. Thank you for your prayers on our behalf!

The picture above is of the members of the church after the vote. They gathered around Jesse and laid hands on him, and then the elders prayed for him. I got to watch the whole thing (with the girls) via skype! I can't wait to be there again in person.

Immanuel Bible Church

As some of you may already know, the Elders at Immanuel Bible Church have unanimously voted to recommend Jesse to their congregation as Lead Teaching Pastor. Jesse and I flew to VA this past week in order for Jesse to preach to the congregation and meet many people in the church. We had a wonderful (and packed) trip! I just flew in this morning, and Jesse stays to meet with more people and preach this coming Sunday. Please be in prayer for the church members as they vote this coming Sunday, January 15.

Between the 3 morning services, we were able to meet many of the church body. It's so exciting for us to meet other brothers and sisters in Christ, and find common bonds.

We already have friends, through the body of Christ. What a blessing! Please be in prayer as we might be leaving my family here in CA, our church, and dear friends. This quote was given to me by a friend, and has encouraged me to think eternally:

Mike White and I put together a little surprise birthday celebration for Jesse last night. Jesse has wanted to go to Red Robin where a girl from our CSUN Bible study works. So, I got Jesse there on time and Mike sent an email out to the Bible study...and it worked! Jesse was completely surprised. Thanks GOC for making this happen!

Arizona Christmas

After our fun time in Albuquerque, we drove through snow-covered mountains to Phoenix to celebrate Christmas with the James (my sister and her family) and Mimi and Papa!

Uncle Ben creatively read the Christmas story from the Bible as the girls acted it out with the manger scene. They had quite a great time doing so.

Nothing better than good laughs in Christmas PJ's with the cousins.

The girls were all thrilled to open and GIVE presents.

The next day we threw Emma a tea birthday party. From dress up clothes to tea sandwiches to painting nails and dancing like princesses- we had quite a fun time.

These girlies kept us laughing.

AlbaTURKEY Trip

Yes, I did say "AlbaTURKEY" because that's how Maddie says Albuquerque! It was quite fun hearing her ask, "Are we in AlbaTURKEY yet?" We just got back from a ten-day road trip from LA to Albuquerque to Phoenix. We had a wonderful time with our families. On our way out to ABQ, one of my favorite memories was reading the Polar Express to Maddie as it was snowing outside and we could see trains passing us on the freeway. It was actually a fun time in the car from snacks to singing and games.

Madison and Savannah LOVED Grandpa and GiGi's dogs! Savannah would growl with excitement every time she'd see one of them.

Jesse and his brother JJ (just talking, not arguing as it may appear :) We enjoyed our time with JJ and Danielle- we ate dinner twice at their house! Thank you both :)

Homie made his famous waffles Christmas morning. The dogs waited patiently for drippings. Aunt Di, Aunt Deb, and Uncle Mike were the best kitchen help all weekend long.

Thank you Gale and Homie for the wonderful visit- you both out did yourselves! We miss you already!

Madison loved watching footage of Grandpa racing on his motorcycle! Now every time we see a motorcycle she asks if it's Grandpa. She says he's fast :)

I was bummed that I didn't get a photo of Gale reading bedtime stories to Maddie on her iPad. Madison thought it was the coolest thing!

Savannah loved climbing the stairs and this little suitcase.

She also rode this rocking horse (Jesse's Grandfather made) until it slid across the floor!

Christmas Card Tradition

It's no secret that I love traditions. It's a special part of family life to create memories that are both meaningful and silly. For instance, on Sundays our kids love popcorn night after night church. We take down the Whirly Pop and love hearing the kernels ping against the pot as they pop. We usually do this dancing to some fun music. Another: every night our family sings a hymn together.

A few years ago I read the book Treasuring God in Our Traditions by Noel Piper. It brought out the point that in our traditions, we want to point to Christ. There are great practical ideas in this book on how to make that work. Here's a Christmas tradition we do...we pray for each family as we receive their Christmas card. I'm sure many of you do this. It's a simple one...we just set the Christmas cards aside, then before bed or at dinner we pray for each family.

For some reason this year the Christmas cards on the fridge have gotten out of control! I have to get one of those Christmas card decorative holders. Do you have a good way to display the cards? I'd also love to hear your favorite Christmas family tradition too!

Do You Ever Feel Like You're Missing the Meaning of this Season?

Christmas is only 10 days away! We are in the thick of it, and I don't know about you, but sometimes this time of year seems so distracting to my walk with the Lord. There's baking, shopping, wrapping, traveling, parties, crafts, concerts, and all the rest. I found this post at Desiring God that has helped me think through this season. I highly suggest you take a few minutes to stop and read it. In short- worship God and be joyful in Him as you "do" all the things on your list!

Beach and Snow in One Day...

Yes, this is Cali in December :) Jesse took the morning off and we made a quick run to the beach. Maddie has been asking to go for weeks now!

After a trip to Costco and naps we went to the Wimer family ranch for the Crossroads Christmas Party...

Photo op in the vintage sleigh. Crossroads didn't hold back- there was a whole lot of snow on one yard, hot drink stands, cookie tables, gingerbread house decorating, and even a tacky Christmas sweater contest.

The little girls loved listening to Enfield sing Christmas songs. By the way, their newest album

(God of God) is our favorite Christmas music and we've been listening to it nonstop.

Savannah's First Birthday Party

Truth in the Tinsel

I love my first Christmas present! My sweet friend just sent me Truth in the Tinsel, which is an advent book for our family to do together. Each day leading up to Christmas has a verse, discussion ideas, and a craft that focuses on a particular part of the Christmas story. Madison and I just read Isaiah 9:2-7. We talked about how the world was dark, like inside your heart dark, before Jesus was born. Then the LIGHT of the world came. This made for great conversation- about how we need a Savior to forgive us from our sins. I think Madison's favorite part was opening the little window and finding a tiny chocolate from the Trader Joe's advent countdown calendar I bought :) I look forward to more fun talks as we focus on Christ's birth this season!

Johnson Visit!

We just had a lovely time with Jim and Gale. They drove in from Albuquerque to visit and be here for Savannah's birthday party (pictures coming soon :).

GiGi had fun playing with Savannah, giving the girls baths, helping me get ready for the party, and shopping with me! Savannah and Maddie love the puppets they brought.

Grandpa gave lots of hugs to Savannah, drew chalk pictures with Maddie in the backyard, went on neighborhood walks, and played at the park.

We had a wonderful time with you! Thank you for coming!!

Birthdays and Holidays

We just had some fun-filled days! Grandma and Grandpa drove here from CO, we celebrated Savannah's first birthday, and had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

365 Days Old!

Our sweet Savannah is turning the big one today. She is such a joy to watch grow. We love her dearly!

Madison loves having a little sister. They love tickling each other, sometimes enjoy playing together, and always love kissing one another.

Doh...I forgot how old I was for a minute!

Her stats are: 18 pounds, 8 ounces and 30 inches. She's got her 8 front teeth in and enjoys eating. She definitely knows what sweets are!

We are thankful to the Lord for this precious gift!

Every Woman's Grace

Every Woman's Grace is a highlight of my week. I look forward to discussing the Word and hearing it taught so diligently. Here's how it works (if you happen to be unfamiliar with this ministry)...We study one particular book of the Bible at a time. This fall semester we studied both 1 and 2 Thessalonians. The homework questions are given on Wednesday, then we daily study the passage and answer the questions on our own. The following Wednesday we first discuss with our small group what we learned from our time in the Word, and then we go to the chapel where that same passage is taught. I just love having the same chapter reinforced 3 times in one week! This is not a fellowship group, but just an encouraging time to be held accountable to study the Word and encourage one another in that endeavor. Here's the sweet group of ladies I get to be apart of...

I love how we get to know one another on a deeper level as we talk about Scripture and pray for one another. Some of my closest friends are in this group! This last Wednesday was our last one until January. The little ones came in to sing for all the ladies.

Do you spy Maddie? Yep, she's old enough to make the singing group now!

It was just precious hearing these little ones sing! I know Madison looks forward to Wednesdays as well. She LOVES her teachers, learning Bible lessons, and playing with her dear friend Abby. Savannah also gets excited to go in the nursery. She's got some buddies in there (lots of boys :)

Our Surprise Visit to Arizona

This was milestone birthday for my sister. Melissa turned the big 30. So my mom, dad, the girls and I all made plans to take a surprise trip to celebrate with her in Arizona. (Jesse couldn't come because he was at a retreat preaching.) I can't say she was surprised, because it's nearly impossible to surprise her! We still had a good time visiting.

Over the weekend we went on several walks, and I have to say Mimi and Papa sure pulled (pushed and carried) their weight and a lot more!

I just love them.

Mimi and Papa took the 3 older girls to their hotel on Saturday afternoon for a special time. They played games, ordered room service for dinner, watched a movie, and wrestled :) While they were all having a blast, Melissa and I did a little shopping and went out to dinner. We haven't had "alone" sister time in so long.

I also need to mention that when we arrived at Burbank Airport Jesse was standing on the roof of the parking lot jumping up and down to welcome us home as we were getting off the plane. Then when we arrived home, I found flowers and a sweet card from him. I have to say, I love this man for so many reasons!

More Dress Up

We've had lots of opportunities to dress up lately! It's been so fun. We went to "Boo at the Zoo" Saturday. Members were able to get in 2 hours early, which was a good thing because the zoo was packed!

CSUN Reformation Party

Jesse and I have a long-standing tradition of celebrating the Reformation! Each year our college Bible study has a Reformation Party where we dress up, eat yummy fall food (we brought pumpkin snickerdoodles), carve pumpkins, sing some songs, and talk about what happened during the Reformation. Now that we have kids, Jesse and I don't really think about OUR costumes, but just get the girls dressed up! I had fun looking back at the last two parties...here's some fun photos from the past...2010 party and 2009 party. I won't bore you with digging up more history :)

Good Reads

I have to say I love Friday mornings when I get together with Rachel White to talk about life and the book we've been reading. It's such an encouraging time as we focus on what God is teaching us and how we can excel still more. We've read The Excellent Wife over the last 2 months.

The last time I read this book, I was engaged. So, after being married five years, this book spoke to me a bit differently. I was thankful for all the Scripture throughout the book. I want to have the Bible convict/instruct me as to what kind of wife I should be, and not just some one's opinion. This book certainly is rooted in Scripture!

John 13:34-35 "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you may also love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." I pray that my love for Jesse will continue to be rooted in Christ's love for us, and His sacrificial love will motivate me to serve in the same way each day.

The next book we're reading together is One with the Shepherd. I'm looking forward to how I will be challenged specifically in the area of being married to a pastor. I'll let you know how it goes!

Savannah is 11 Months

This sweet girl is starting to crack me up. She's got a funny personality. In this video Savannah is playing peek a boo with her skirt! We were having dinner, and she started these shenanigans. I just love her. I can't believe she's already 11 months old. She was just an infant that slept all the time. Now she's pretending to talk on the phone, playing peek a boo, walking when I hold her hand, and very into pretending. Ah, I have to remember to cherish every moment with an eye on eternity. I love living in both worlds- this temporal life and its good gifts from our Heavenly Father AND our eternal life which gives me a glorious hope of my home to come.

Time for An Upgrade

I snapped a photo of Madison sleeping the other day. She is obviously a bit big for her toddler bed.

So, I got to work painting ($12 for spray paint), then put together the twin bed we were given. Rachel White and I did this project while Jesse was out of town. Rachel brought the drill, and we put this beauty together.

Maddie was thrilled to sleep in a big bed! We found the sheets for $10 and the comforter for $30 at Target.

So the cost of the whole bed: $52. I think that's pretty good!

Pumpkin Patch

Today has been one of those days where you just don't stop! Jesse is out of town teaching at an evangelism conference in NE, so the girls and I had a fun-filled day! We started out with delicious homemade pumpkin pancakes.

Then we went to....

I'm so thankful for these two little munchkins. Madison and Savannah are so fun. Tonight we had girls night because Daddy was at the Elders Meeting. We started out the evening with pasta for dinner (what else?), and then went for a walk/bike ride...

When we got back home I overheard the girls giggling in the bathroom, so I checked out what was going on....dress up!

They got into the play jewelry and hair bows. Too cute.

After dress up we had a little craft.

I feel so blessed to be the mother of these girls, and to have the privilege and responsibility to train them in the Lord. I'm thankful tonight.

Zoo Time

We've been enjoying some family days at the LA Zoo lately thanks to Gigi and Grandpa! They gave Madison (and our whole family) year passes to the zoo for her birthday. We sure enjoy going for short visits often.

The new elephant area is quite amazing! This was Maddie's favorite animal of the day!

The jaguar was getting his exercise pacing around his little cage. It's fun going early in the morning, because that's when the animals are active.

It was pretty funny watching this hippo breath through his huge nostrils every few minutes.

Savannah loved it when any animal moved...she squirmed right along with them!

There's a new play structure area that Madison enjoyed running around in for a bit.

Thanks again Grandpa and GiGi for this gift that keeps on giving for the whole family!

Here's a funny video of every day life at the Johnson's house...Savannah is ripping up papers all over the floor while trying to eat Maddie's feet! We keep it real here :) By the way, Madison is looking at a toy catalogue!

Aunt Dottie's Visit

The Johnsons love Aunt Dottie! She's always been a special part of my life. I can't remember a time when Aunt Dottie hasn't been close to me. When I was little she took me to the circus, on walks, out to lunch, etc. All through high school and college Aunt Dottie and I wrote letters almost weekly. She's always remembering our birthdays and holidays with a card or a package in the mail for me and the kids. She's really the best aunt. She always been so involved in her family's life (starting with my mom and Aunt Jennifer). Aunt Dottie is selfless, generous, thoughtful, cute, and she's a trouper. Whatever we have going, she happily comes along and makes the day fun. She spent the last month visiting Cali, so here are some of the things we did...

We had a birthday party for her...she turned 99!

We even had the excitement of a little earthquake during our tea time!

Maddie also loved playing Sorry, dress up dolls, puzzles, reading, and the matching game with Aunt Dottie.

She was always ready to play along with whatever pretend game was happening!

It's hard for all of us to see sweet Aunt Dottie go home to Mass. She's a joy to have here. I can't remember ever hearing her complain once. I'm so thankful for the time we've had together.

Savannah is 10 Months

I just love this little shnookie. She's full of laughs, smiles, and growls! Yes, she growls at animals and Maddie when they crawl around and play chase on the floor...it's quite entertaining.

Savannah still takes 2 naps a day, and sleeps about 11 hours at night (loving that!). We just went through about a week of teething where she was waking during the night, and that threw us all off! Poor girl wasn't wanting to eat either. Now she as about 7 teeth! She prefers eating table food over the baby stuff (I don't blame her). She's been waving hi and bye and doing sign language at meals. It's so fun to see her communicate a little. Savannah is trying to stand on her own these days, and loves to walk along furniture or with a cart. She claps and dances to music!

My prayer for this sweet gift from God is that she will grow into a godly young lady that fears and loves Him. That her faith will be strong and that she will be a testimony to others of His grace. I'm so thankful to my Heavenly Father for this sweet gift!

The Long-Awaited Ballet Classes!

Madison is just thrilled that ballet classes have begun! The best part is that our sweet friend Anna is teaching. Another huge bonus is that our friends are in the class with us (Abby Busenitz and Abby Grauman). Anna did a wonderful job teaching the girls this past Tuesday, and we're excited to see their skills (listening, following directions, and ballet skills:) improve over the next weeks and months.

The girls began with pretending to be little seeds.

Then they grew up to be flowers that reached for the sun.

Time to stay in your hoop and practice the moves (I need some of these at home...ha).

Anna bought the girls some dress up things, and then they did free dance time to princess music! What a hit!

At the end of class Maddie said, "I love ballet and don't want to leave!" That afternoon she didn't sleep during nap time, but practiced ballet for 1 1/2 hours in her room!

Yellowstone

The Davis' were kind enough to take time to join us for 2 days in Yellowstone. Here's what we saw...pretty amazing. If you haven't gone yet, you should make it happen!

Old Faithful! About 5 seconds after this photo was taken, we were sprayed with a bunch of the water! It was so refreshing :) Kinda cool that the water was cold by the time it hit us because it's scalding when it first comes out!

I was so thankful for this week with Jesse! The day after we got home he left to teach at a conference in Florida. These family times are precious since Jesse travels a bunch!

This spot is called "hook and cook". Some people used to catch a fish from the lake, then stick it in this hot spring to cook it!

The hot springs had such beautiful color!

That day we had a picnic by the river.

We saw bison, deer, elk, and an eagle on the trip! God's creation is so beautiful and varied. It's interesting how each creation is made uniquely.

This is where "Yellowstone" got its name- from the color of the stone.

From here Eric and Leslie drove home, and we continued through to the top of Yellowstone and drove all the way back that night.

God's design is amazing.

On the drive home, we made a pit stop at Old Faithful again and changed the girls into jammies. In that short time, we were able to see Old Faithful go off a second time!

Jesse and I were so thankful for many things about this trip. A few of them are...see God's loving sovereignty in providing us with so many good things, extra time together to talk as a family, time with Eric and Leslie that was sharpening to our our walks with the Lord...and the list goes on. We even played a "thankful" game in the car when Madison started to get tired of being in her car seat. She was thankful for "God creating beautiful trees and mountains!"

Jackson Hole

Our family just got back from a week long trip to Jackson Hole, WY. We've been wanting to go there ever since our friends, Eric and Leslie Davis (and others :), moved there to plant a church. So, God allowed us to fly with miles we've earned, rent a car for almost nothing, and stay with the Davis'. We were so blessed by our time together as a family and visiting dear friends. Our conversations while hiking, eating, driving, and late at night were so encouraging and challenging to our walk with Christ- it was a refreshing time for Jesse and I spiritually.

Madison was my carry-on :) Both girls did GREAT on the plane!

Savannah was happy to be in a park when we got to Salt Lake.

Both girls got their wiggles out before the 4 1/2 hour drive to Jackson.

Maddie and Charlotte became good little friends. Staying with them for a week was a great opportunity for the girls to learn what it means to be selfless, and not greedy. It's so hard to share, and they had some great practice!! Once we got home, Madison was asking to go back to play with her friend!

On Friday the Davis' were so kind to take us on a great hike to Hidden Falls in the Tetons.

Everyone that passed us made some funny comment about all of us were carrying kids while hiking!

Savvy just loved bouncing along in the Ergo!

Jesse and Eric and Leslie and I had thought provoking discussions as we hiked- redeeming the time! After this fun hike we were able to visit over dinner with Chris and Becky and Melissa who also left CA to help start the church. It was a fun evening of catching up and talking about minisrty.

We spent Saturday as a family just walking around town, going to the farmers market, and the park.

That night, Leslie and Eric sent Jesse and I out on a date. It was so kind and selfless of them to watch the girls while we went to the Teton Village for Thai food. Jesse and I were able to have WONDERFUL conversations without being interrupted!!! It was a sweet time.

On Sunday we got to go to Cornerstone Church. This is the church plant we've been wanting to see for so long! What an encouragement it was to see how the Lord is growing His church through the faithful efforts of those who have planted it. Jackson was in need of a Bible-teaching church, and now there is one! Everyone was so warm and welcoming. What an exciting time it is to watch the Lord use His servants this way. *Highlight for me!*

On the Road Again...

The Johnsons (and dog, of course) are hitting the road again! We are leaving for Jackson Hole to visit our friends the Davis. Jesse and I were both friends with Eric and Leslie before they moved to Wyoming to church plant. We are finally getting out there to see them, the church, and the Tetons :) I'm sure there will be plenty photos of God's gorgeous creation when we get back.

We took a family trip to see horses that our friend Brianne sometimes takes care of.

Appointments

This morning was filled with appointments...first a hair cut for Madison (and dog joined, as you can see).

Then Savannah got to see Dr. Sherman for her 9 month well check.

(I love all his pins, crazy ties, and blue pants :)

Then Maddie had her 3 year old well check appointment.

Both girlies are lookin good and feelin healthy!

Savannah is Nine Months!

As you can see, Aunt Dottie is in town! We get to visit with her for the next month.

This sweet girl in her arms is nine months already! Here's what she's up to...crawling everywhere, standing and walking along anything she can remotely reach, clapping her hands, doing sign language for "more" and "all done" when eating, teething (4 in at this point), and she says "Ma Ma", "Da Da", and "Meh Meh" (for Maddie). Maddie happens to be her favorite person..Savanny (as M calls her) starts jumping like crazy and screeching with excitement when she hears her big sis coming!

Her stats are: 16 pounds, 9 ounces (12th percentile) and her length is 28 1/2 inches (86th percentile). Doctor Sherman says she's long and lean and healthy!

Savannah Grace is a joy to me. I just love cuddling this little one. She likes being sung to and held right before bed, other than that she's always on the move! We thank the Lord for this precious gift and pray for her salvation daily.

We also made homemade Italian meatballs and sauce with Mimi the other day. Both girls were part of the process :)

This tomato sauce was made from the roma tomatoes we've grown in our garden, so it's a pretty special sauce! We made two huge pots of it, and then froze it in serving sizes for yummy dinners to come.

Our Washington Trip!

Two days after our NC trip, we repacked our bags and all four of us hopped on a plane to Washington. Jesse had the privilege of preaching at the high school camp for Eastridge Baptist, a church where one of his friends pastors in Seattle. The camp was at Cascades, which was one of the most beautiful facilities I've ever been to! While Jesse was preaching the girls and I explored the grounds:

Another day while Jesse was preaching we went on a hike. Savannah loves being in the ergo carrier and Maddie bounced along ahead of me!

The girls were so happy to see Daddy during free time!

There was a zip line, ropes course, and lake at the camp. Jesse and I did the zip line through the forest one day- super fun!

On another day we all went out on a canoe. After a while Savannah didn't love the life jacket, so she and I stayed on shore while Jesse took Maddie around the lake.

Rachel Drollinger came and picked the girls and I up from camp a couple days early, and we spent time visiting. It was great to having some girlfriend time and watching our kids interact, being that they are so close in age (Andrew- 4 years, Sierra and Maddie- 3 years and born the same day, and Brighton is only a week and a half younger than Savannah!)

The Drollingers have a beautiful view of Rainier right from their house and from the lake down the road. Rach and I took the kids to Lake Tapps one evening for dinner.

One evening Rachel read bedtime stories to the kids outside. Sierra and Mads matched in their blue princess nightgowns!

I LOVE the giggles! What could be better to get the kids ready for bed than a good jump on the trampoline?!

One morning while Andrew was at VBS, the girls had a tea party! They really enjoyed the snacks and painting nails.

We went to a fair one evening and watched a man riding a horse standing up, and than he did a back flip!

Once the dads made it home, we had an amazing outing to Crystal Mountain. The Drollingers were so kind to host us for a week and take us to many beautiful places. We're so thankful for our time with them- what sweet friends!

Maddie usually loves to hike, but this day she was just getting over being sick, so she stayed in the backpack the whole hike down the mountain.

The Drollingers also have little hikers, but Andrew was sick, too. So John ended up carrying him the whole way down.

We were also able to spend time with a bunch of our other Washington friends, but didn't get any photos unfortunately. Thanks to everyone who had meals with us and visited while we were there! We had a fantastic trip!

North Carolina

In July, Jesse and I got to spend five days in the mountains outside of Asheville, North Carolina. We left the girls at home, so it was just the two of us (well, actually the two of us plus 400 high schoolers!). Jesse was preaching at a high school conference, and we saw a bunch of past seminary grads with their youth groups. It was super hard leaving the girls, and I don't think I'll be doing that again, but we were grateful that my parents were able to watch them, so Jesse and I could have a great trip together.

Here's the Robert E. Lee Hall. Built in the 1800's this originally was a house. It was incredibly large, and overlooked the Appalachian mountains.

We did a hike with the high schoolers one afternoon during free time.

Allen Cagel and Jesse were able to talk about church ministry, and I listened in :)

One morning Jesse and I took a little outing down to Asheville. We went to Tupelo Honey Cafe. This place was amazing- so cute and everything was delicious! I had the sweet potato pancakes.

After our big breakfast we walked around a few shops and bookstores. This one was Jesse's favorite.

One evening the conference had a Christian rapper, Tedashii, in for a concert. I had no idea who he was, but all the high schoolers certainly did! It was amazing to hear how God saved him and how he became a rapper.

Here's a bunch of the kids. We enjoyed getting to know them, and loved their passion for Christ.

It was neat for me to sit and listen to all of Jesse's messages (since I'm not always able to do that with little ones). The speakers also did a Q & A one afternoon, and I was impressed at how serious the students were about being humble learners and seeking to live for Christ at a young age.

Thanks again to Mimi and Papa for giving Jesse and I this time away. Madison and Savannah loved their time with you.

Madison's Birthday Party was a Hoot!

Madison's birthday is July 16, and we had her party on July 23. I'm a bit behind on blogging (we have been traveling), but here are all the photos from it. I'm posting a lot of images so the family that wasn't able to make it can get the full picture. So, here it goes:

Our birthday girl turned three!!

Maddie is really into owls, so we had an owl-themed birthday party. I made this sign to decorate, and now it's in her room.

We were also thrilled to have GiGi fly in from ABQ for the weekend. We had a delightful time together. Gale helped me tremendously preparing for the party. I couldn't have had it all ready to go without her!

We had a fun day celebrating God's gift to us in Madison. It is such a joy to be her mom and watch her grow up. My prayer every day is that she would grow into a woman that fears and loves our Lord.

Cousins Visit

We just had a wonderful time with the cousins! Our days were filled with Knott's, pool, beach, pretend, horses, tea parties, and more. It's a joy to watch these little girls together. I'm so thankful for these times! May the Lord work in their hearts and draw them to Himself at an early age. That is my prayer.

When I walked in Savannah's room this morning I was surprised to see her STANDING in her crib! This girl is a fast learner. I can tell she wants to keep up with the big kids (especially Maddie). She army crawls so fast and uses her toes to push that she has bled on her big toes!

Knott's Berry Farm

We had a fun-filled day at Knott's Berry Farm on Tuesday!

Jesse and Maddie weren't very interested in the Snoopy Show...ha!

What made the day even better was having Papa, Mimi, Aunt Melissa, Charis and Emma there!

Savannah is my sweetie- she was so good all day even though it was hot and she had a cold. What a little trooper.

While Daddy's Away...

Jesse is in Little Rock preaching at an evangelism conference this week, and the girls and I have had some sweet (and challenging) times together in his absence.

One of those sweet moments was during Madison's bath the other day. She asked, "Mommy, may I have no bath toys today? I want to just talk with you about Daddy." "OK." I said. "What do you want to tell me?" "No, I want you to talk about Daddy." So I then told her how Jesse and I met, and what I liked about him from the beginning. I told her, "I liked Daddy because I could tell he loved Jesus so much." Maddie then said, "I love Jesus too."

Today we stayed home from church because Maddie and I have sore throats and don't want to get other's sick. At lunch, Madison asked, "Can I pray?" She's never asked to pray before....so I said sure. She closed her eyes, and simply said, "Dear Jesus, please help Mommy feel better. Jesus thank you for this food. Amen." Her thoughtfulness made me tear up!

It's good for me to remember these sweet moments during the challenging times. Madison has been working on responding without complaining/whining. I don't want her to think it's OK to fall apart when she doesn't get her way. Faithfully training through this is challenging. I believe that through God's strength and His Word, both Madison and I will benefit from the effort it takes to train her to obey the first time AND with a good attitude.

Hebrews 13:17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

I John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.

As you may remember, a few months ago we planted a little garden at our new home. We have been loving on this garden since then- watering, weeding, pruning, killing tomato worms, putting in stakes to support the growing plants, and now harvesting! We've had quite a lot of green beans- delicious. We've picked them several times, and new ones grow back quickly. The tomatoes are just turning red, so it's time for me to make tomato sauce with the Roma ones...yum. We've had just a few strawberries and cucumbers. The peppers are about to turn red, so they should be ready for picking soon. The herbs are just growing out of control! Today I made peach sun tea with some of the mint leaves- excited to try it! It's been a fun project to keep up with as a family. Jesse has a green thumb, that's for sure. A funny tid bit on him...he used to do lawn care before he moved to Cali and went to seminary. So he's a professional.

Promises in Christ

Jesse has taken the girls to the park, and given me the morning to study the Word more in-depth. I love these mornings...I've "gotten away" a few times this summer to sit with my Bible and study for a longer period of time. When I'm at home, I only have short bits of time to read and pray before one of my sweet little girls needs me or the laundry needs to be folded or the doorbell rings, etc. I'm sitting in Starbucks after studying the Word for about 2 hours and I'm filled with thankfulness to our Savior. I think it would be helpful for me to write down some of what I've learned as a way for me to remember what God is impressing upon me. Please don't feel like you have to read all of this, but if you do, I pray God's amazing kindness is revealed to you and you are brought to a place where you humbly and thankfully praise Him. I'm doing a study through Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians where I'm just noting all of God's promises to us as His children. What HE has done for His redeemed. I want to answer the question, "Who am I in Christ?" Well, this is no small study because I have come to find out that salvation promises so much more than I generally think. The list I've typed out of God's promises to His children is extensive. Listen to these promises He has made to those who are given faith, repent of sin, and trust in Him: we are justified by faith (not works), crucified with Christ, He gave Himself for me, grace through Christ, faith through Christ, no longer slaves to sin; but slaves to Christ which makes us heirs with Him, Heavenly citizenship, hope of righteousness, eternal life, new creation, He's lavished on us all wisdom and insight through His Word, He's made known the mystery of His will, the Holy Spirit is our guarantee of our inheritance, made us alive, we're adopted into His family, He looks at us as holy and blameless because of the work of His Son on the cross, He can show us the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness towards us, we are given boldness and access with confidence through our faith in Him, He is able to do more than we ask or think according to His power that works within us, etc. These are just a few of the promises of God that the Scripture gives to us. I've listed the rest that I've found so far in Galatians and Ephesians with chapter and verse here. I think that so often I focus on all that the Bible tells me to "do", that I become almost weighed down with wanting to be loving, patient, giving, humble, etc. BUT, when I consider all that Christ has accomplished for me, when I sit and remember His love for me, what He's sacrificed for me, all of a sudden my obedience becomes more joyful. How I can I respond any other way after seeing all that Christ has done for me? He crushed His only Son to save me, my only response is one of joy and obedience and praise. My prayer is that I will dwell on my Heavenly Father's lavish love for me and that this will affect the way I think, parent, talk, and live every aspect of my life. Hold me to this. I pray you can rejoice with me in Christ's abundant, undeserving, immeasurable riches of His grace.

Fourth of July

We started our Fourth of July festivities the day before by making chocolate gelato and vanilla ice cream. Jesse and Maddie helped with the process!

We had a few friends come over in the afternoon to celebrate the 4th. Mike was so funny holding Savannah-I think it made him nervous :)! He's great with her.

Helpers

After hanging out all evening with friends, we went to see some fireworks.

Madison and Savannah loved them! The next night (July 5th) Maddie asked, "Can we go see fire lights again tonight?" We told her to start counting down the days...364 left until more fireworks!

Our 5th Anniversary

I love being married to this man. He's my best friend. It's fun living with him. He actually lives what he preaches- he's such a godly man. He leads me with the way he lives, not in some domineering way, but in a true loving sacrificial way. He loves the Lord more than me, and I'm thankful for that. And he loves me more than himself- it shows.

I am blessed beyond measure.

On June 23 (our anniversary), I was sick in bed (the kind of sick where you can't do anything- fever, aches, etc.). The "in sickness and health" part of the vows rang true that day. Jesse took the day off to help me with the kids. He was a gem. So, our date was postponed until a couple nights ago. Jesse took me to Sofi, a Greek restaurant in West Hollywood. We were pretty excited about the fact that there were no strollers, car seats, potty trips, questions every 15 seconds, etc. on this date :) We couldn't remember the last time we went out just the two of us. True bliss.

After dinner, we walked over to the Grove. We looked in a few stores, and then plopped down on the lawn and listened to a live band.

I love you, Jesse! I look forward to future adventures with you...

The White Wedding

Two weekends ago Mike and Rachel got married! We were to happy to be apart of their special day. Jesse performed the wedding, I was a bridesmaid, and Madison was the flower girl :)

Resolved 2011

One of our annual highlights is going to the Resolved Conference in Palm Springs. Jesse and I take turns listening to the messages while the other is with the kids.

This is such a great venue- plenty of room.

Madison loved the music. At one point, she turned to me and said, "Mommy this music is so good I have goose bumps!" We have the blessing of hearing John and Lisa Martin lead worship every Sunday, but at Resolved they fill the band out a bit more. I love being led to the throne of God with their music- it's passionate and Gospel-centered. Enfield has produced several wonderful CD's. If you haven't gotten them yet, here's where you can find out about them.

Saturday night they had a Q&A panel with all the speakers...

Rick Holland, CJ Mahaney, John MacArthur, Al Mohler, and Steve Lawson.

It was a good time of getting to know them a bit more personally and a chance to just hear what's on their hearts.

The preaching was of course amazing. As a side note, Jesse has begun a blog with several of his pastor friends that is quite thought provoking. You can find his review of the messages there. Check The Cripplegate out!!

I also enjoyed time spent with my friend Michelle and her two adorable boys. We went swimming with the 4 kids one morning. Michelle and I were blessed by our husbands who watched the kids so we could go to one of the sessions together.

We stayed in the best location possible! It was a little rental condo that backed right up to the conference center. Last year's hotel room was a further walk than this condo to the conference. Plus, we had our own kitchen where we cooked. Each time we went swimming, we were the only ones there!

Savannah is Seven Months

Our sweet Savannah Grace is already seven months! She weighs about 15 pounds and looks pretty cute in a bathing suit :)

She's started eating baby food 1-2 times a day. She has liked everything she's tried so far...peas, carrots, mangoes, squash, and oatmeal.

One of her favorite things to do is jump, especially when she can watch me work in the kitchen.

The girls enjoy watching Backyardigans movies together.

Savannah has also started to crawl a bit- she can get where she wants to go, but it doesn't look pretty. It's more of a scoot and lunge movement. She's a determined little girl and doesn't like to stay still for one moment.

My sweet baby can still fall asleep in the stroller on those long days out.

I just love this baby, and thank God every day for the gift she is to us.

Lemon Cream Pie

Cooking is something Madison and I enjoy doing together. Just about any time I'm making a recipe, she asks to scoot the step stool over and "help". Well, for a while this "help" was really just a whole lot more work for me- crumbs everywhere, finger-dipping in whatever we were making, lots of questions, etc. I loved every minute of it along the way, and now she is really beginning to be quite a big helper. She even sings, "I'm a helper, I'm a helper, I'm a helper Jesus says." (she picked that ditty up in Sunday school :0) Anyways, we still have a plethora of lemons leftover from Rach's bridal shower and I'm having fun finding new lemony recipes. This one I found on Karen Harasick's blog was a keeper!

First, Maddie mashed the graham crackers.

Secondly, we mixed the ingredients for the crust together.

While the crust was baking, we squeezed and zested the lemons.

As the crust cooled, we mixed the lemon, sugar, egg yolks, etc. together over the stove until it thickened.

Madison rinsed all the dirty dishes as we waited for the mixture to cool completely.

Savannah had a blast watching us cook. She just loves jumping!!

While the mixture cooled, we made some fresh whipping cream, spread it on top of the lemon mixture, then garnished the pie with a lemon. We refrigerated it and had nap time :)

The pie was a huge hit to our guests that night!

Grandma and Grandpa

This week we've had 2 fun-filled days with Grandma and Grandpa Robert. The first day of their visit we went to the Reagan Library.

The marine layer lifted by the time we finished our tour, so we had a nice view of Simi Valley.

Madison's highlight of the day was "riding" the horse with Grandma and walking through Air Force One.

Savannah loves jumping with Grandma.

Today we went to Descanso Gardens.

We had a beautiful day together!

Parent Dedication

Last Sunday, Deidre and I got to stand before our church, and publicly "dedicate" ourselves as parents. We, along with about 40 other sets of parents, stood before the congregation. While we were holding Savannah, Pastor MacArthur asked us if it was our desire to raise her in fear and admonition of the Lord. With the accountability of the rest of our church, we declared that it was our desire to raise Savannah according to Scripture.

With our entire church looking at us, Savannah looking at them, and Deidre and I looking at our pastor, pastor John then briefly explained the duties of parents. God commands parents not to aggravate their children. We are to discipline our children, love them, and constantly point them to the gospel. We are to teach them about Jesus, show them their sin, and lead them to repentance.

To do this, we said we would expose them as much as possible to the influence of the church, to the leadership of the elders, and to godliness in the home. As we teach our daughter the gospel, she should see us daily living it out.

God made children in such a way that they implicitly trust their parents. While children are sinful, they are also helpless. Because of that, parents have a unique position of influence in their lives. Parents have a choice to make: they can use that influence for their own ends (either ignoring their children, or parenting them for some sundry goal), or they can use that influence to remind them of the God who made the world, encourage them to keep away from the sin that destroyed it, and point them to the Savior of all, Jesus Christ. We proclaimed that we would do the latter.

Then the congregation declared that they would aid us in this task. And they already are. Madison came home last week excited about the parable of the good Samaritan. Savannah is cared for by loving people who treasure Christ, and who want her to grow up to do the same.

Deidre and I are excited to be part of Grace Church, and thankful that we are raising our kids in this environment.
